What Is A Dental Implant?

A dental implant is used to restore missing teeth.  Implants are a great way to replace a single tooth  or multiple missing teeth instead of placing a bridge or denture.  The implant itself is a large titanium screw which has a platform on top that a crown abuttment or a denture attachment can be placed.  A crown or denture is then made to fit.

What Are The Advantages Of Dental Implants?

In many cases, dental implants are the best way to restore missing teeth.  They can last many more years than the alternative treatment options, they will not decay, they help preserve bone in the area, you can floss around them like your own natural teeth, and the teeth on either side of the space don't have to be cut down to attach a bridge to.

A bridge is difficult to floss under and often fails prematurely because it isn't flossed regularly to prevent decay (see example of teeth cut down for a bridge below).  Also, when a tooth is removed, the bone will shrink in width and height over time.  An implant will keep the bone from deteriorating.

How Long Will They Last?

We don't know the complete answer on this because the first implants were placed in 1965 and are still doing well.  We estimate that successful implants can last around 25 years.  The success rate goes down in areas where the bone is insufficient or when they are placed in patients who smoke.  Implants are twice as likely to fail in smokers than nonsmokers.

How Long Does It Take?

The titanium implant is surgically placed in the bone in one procedure. It typically takes about 4-6 months for bone to attach to the implant to provide a solid base for the restoration.  The dentist then takes an impression of the implant and sends it to the lab to make the crown to fit the implant.  The crown is then cemented into place on the following appointment.  If the space in your teeth is visible, a temporary can be made to fill the space while the area heals.

How Much Do They Cost?

Restoring a single implant can be a few hundred dollars more than placing a bridge. It will vary according to what your insurance provider allows for coverage, so you should check with your insurance provider and find out how they cover placement and restoration of dental implants.  The extra money spent will be worth it in the long run.

Are There Any Disadvantages?

Some areas are better restored with a bridge or denture depending on the condition of the bone.  Dental implants take longer to restore and cost more, but the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
